Why I'm Voting For McCain

Comments

I believe McCain will have trouble getting any tax cuts through with his war like nature.

-War in Iraq
-War in Afghanistan
-War on Terror
-War on Drugs
-Up and coming War with Iran, Sudan, Pakistan and possibly N. Korea.

Washington DC is the real enemy of America. But the root causes of my concern regarding the Constitution and its enemies were not the subjects of this post. The long-term prospects of America's economic growth resulting in real prosperity are the topic. This requires a less intrusive government and lowering tax rates are an important part. If we don't do it Americans will suffer a continuation of economic stagnation due to the fact that we are less competitive to other nations.

I guess my concern is that in order to fund these wars, McCain will be limited in what he can do in the way of tax cuts.

Zak,

I've got no problem with McCain just holding the line on taxes or even raising some taxes on the rich which I'd be happy to elaborate on ad infinitum on request, but taxes aren't a major issue. What's important is that he draws a line in the sand on spending and only allocates more money to present and future wars of his choosing.

It's pure speculation that we will be at war with Iran, Sudan, Pakistan and North Korea. The pork barrel spending earmarks would more than make up the difference. The US defense spending is low as a percentage of the budget as well as compared to our GDP on a historical basis.

I don't think any politician is capable of that. I hope McCain proves me wrong.
I agree that it is speculation but am fearful enough that I don't know that I want to put the candidate most likely to take us there into office. I am also more concerned with the War on Drugs spending. We have spent more there than on both foreign war fronts combined.

It is so wasteful and freedom-limiting.

Damn it, why did Ron Paul have to drop out. He only had 2 issues that I was not in agreement.
Why aren't Americans wise enough to vote for Ron Paul giving him the wins needed for the Republican nomination? I voted for Ron Paul in 1988 and in the 2008 Arizona Republican primary.

At least McCain offers the hope of restraint than no Democrat does, and there's no possible way he could be worse than Bush, but both "Crats" certainly will be, so that's reason enough to vote for McCain - he's the only candidate who ofers any real hope of change.

That said, you're probably right.

People are scared of a straight talker and it allows the mainstream candidates to marginalize them early on. Plus, the system is set up to keep the 2 major parties in power.
I agree Ted, I think that at least McCain will make the attempt. I'd love to see him just refuse to sign bills with pork in them until it's removed.

The Two-party system seems to be ingrained into America's consciousness. Besides the Republicans and Democrats have passed laws making it difficult for anyone else to get on the ballot. The political class aint criminals because they make the laws.

Jeff, you instill a feeling of hope in me! I'm so glad we chatted, even if these other guys were a bit distracting.
Haha. It's been a while. The startup I'm at is starting to pick up steam so I haven't paid a lot of attention to politics lately. I know I'm voting for McCain, just wake me up in November.
OK, and seriously, if McCain vetoes one spending bill as he said he would do with earmarks, it'll be worth the price of admission.
veto, veto, veto!
Amen to that. I'll even dance a very bad Irish jig in his honor.

Where is that bottle of Jameson's my parents brought back from the old country?

The war is so big, the wars are so big, it skews (destroys) everything said here about economy.

Examine McCain's ability to stand up to pressures. Look at McCain year by year and see his constant shifting to please whatever electorate he is courting, to please whatever powerbrokers he is courting. Just look at tax policy. Just look at the Patriot Act. Just look at trade. The guy is spineless, even while shaking his warmongering fist in empty air.

McCain, his past promises, will be just like Dubya, only lots older.

I tend to agree with you. I would like to also point out that McCain has talked tough about pork barrel spending but he is one of the worst abusers of it himself. I think it is part of the "Maverick" persona he likes to throw out there.

He's still the lesser of Evils, I've lived in Arizona for 21 years and this will be the first time I will be voting for him. I'd vote for Gus Hall before I'd vote for Obama or Clinton. I'm not happy with the Republican Pary in Congress but there is no other alternative, except the Libertarian Party and they are not going to win.

Zak, I was tryiing to joke about and ignore the first moron, but now that he's been joined by a bigger one, I need to know - would you prefer I level them or bow out?
Feel free to flame away. ;) Just use logic.

Math - Your say this about McCain - "The guy is spineless, even while shaking his warmongering fist in empty air". And where did you serve?

When I look at McCain and Hilary's stances on different issues, they are really only different on Abortion and Health care. Everything else is typical big government politics. If I were a Democrat I would be scared that Hilary was too much like McCain and if I were a Republican, I would fear McCain's similarities to Hilary.

Regardless of who wins this election, we are doomed.
Well you could move to the Cayman Islands?

Right Zak. Follow the money.

Doomed? Like we were "doomed" before all the other presidents that people said would doom us? Thank goodness the American people and the American markets are always strong enough for horrible leadership to destroy.

I was thinking Estonia. Have you seen the documentary, "Singing Revolution"?
It is really well done and incredibly inspiring to see a country rise up against oppression and start a budding libertarian government.
How cold is Estonia in winter? I want to be where it's warm in the winter. Tucson is nice in the winter, not too many cold spells. But we are under the Federal Boot and have too many commies running things in this state, oh well.
HAHA. Yeah, I know the feeling. Cops have been kicking down doors all over Tennessee lately. Supposedly they are looking for terrorists though none have been arrested. Only 300+ arrests for other crimes. I guess that is what we get now that the 4th amendment has been all but booted by the US Supreme Court.
Zak, haven't people in Arizona, especially Tucson, been courting the Federal dollar for decades? Go, go, go get federal jobs, federal installations, federal bases, federal pension, federal everything. Now Tucson has what it has been working for. A federally dominated community. Right?
I have to agree with Math: MCCAIN IS SPINELESS! I can't believe an intelligent person, not brainwashed by Republican propaganda, would vote for him. This country needs a change for the better and the Democratic Party is offering that so we can at least get up to date with the other leading countries in the world, and regain their respect. Bush and his ilk have made America totally unpopular!
McCain is the only one running for President who is honest. As far as his senatorial voting record is concerned, all Senators hedge their bets to some extent, it's just the nature of politics in the US Senate.
McCain a perfect choice? NO! But look at what the democrats are offering, NOTHING.
