Obama: Be Afraid, Be Vary Afraid

Very good point about having to compete in the world as opposed to just having natural advantage over developing nations.
The Wealth of Nations is a classic, Adam Smith has yet to be proven wrong.
The fact that Sen. Obama has said he will pop down to see Raul Castro and had a Ernesto Guevara pic in one of his campaign HQs suggest that your analogy is apt.

Zak, you said, "social activists on the left are leading us down the wrong road, one that leads to national bankruptcy and a loss of both economic freedom and ultimately civil liberties."

Is that not the very path we are being led down by the Bush/Cheney administration?

Yes- it's the Washington DC culture. The AARP continues to lobby for benefits which will bankrupt the nation. There are many people to blame so don't shoot the messenger. ;)

The AARP is lobbying for benefits that Halliburton and Blackwater got without any real public lobbying at all. Just the lobbying between buddies.

You are correct that there are lots of groups pushing for selfish consumptive benefits. In both parties. In all parties.

There are lots of groups wanting govt to do something. But is that bankrupting us? What is bankrupting us is NOT social services, but war in a world where the war is creating more problems that it was supposed to solve. The USA was not bankrupted under Clinton, was it?

I don't want to defend Demo policies, but they are not the only ones spying on citizens, pushing for military courts, ripping apart the constitution, overexpanding the power of the presidency, making alliances with wacko fascists, and trying to break down separation between church and state.

If you are going to point a finger at people taking the US down a road, point it around at the ones who have power in their hands now.

W is LBJ with a human face. ;) It must be a Halliburton conspiracy. Too bad I don't own the stock.
I liked "W" in his first term. Strong, determined and resolute. I don't know what happened to him in his 2nd term. He has not been the same.
If W had been resolute, there would not have BEEN a 9/11. In Dubya's first term, he used up all his lies, all his brains, and all his political chits on creating the disasters that destroyed Republican chances for the next twelve years. Then what happened? He just sat back with his feet up in the white house like he went through college. Goofing off. Waiting for someone to bail him out.

But this is not about W (unless the whole election of Obama can be attributed to the Bush failure and America's reaction to it).

What is the biggest danger Obama presents?

No it is not socialism.

Not taxes.

Not appeasement.

I suggest it is polarization. The same kind of polarization Bush created by snubbing his nose at half of America (the working half, the parenting half, the diplomatic half, the communitarian half, the half that actually knows what the constitution says). Obama - and the liberals he will be putting into positions of power - will certainly run their own polarization scam, alienating another half of America (the half with family values, the half that wants to keep local rights, the half that knows you can't solve problems by throwing money at them, the half that doesn't trust government).

Then the pendulum will swing again.

Math: W became LBJ. The left doesn't respect or understand the Constitution and the Neo-cons are trapped in the political world created by the "Progressives" a kind of lukewarm commitment, they are no more cynical than the left. Where are we now? Both the ramping up of leverage and the de-leveraging are part of the human condition only big institutions have exaggerated it and there is a lot more pain ahead. I suggest that you read Colin Twiggs’ Trading Diary and act accordingly. If you still own stock you need to buy put options and sell calls to pay for the puts, just remember that cash is a position. But that’s my opinion and I am not licensed to give financial advice. Barack Obama has no control over the real world and if he really thinks that he can be Mr. Fix It then he is a bigger fool than Herbert Hoover and FDR.

Agreed.

Investment? I am going to invest in knowledge and children. The two oldest and surest of commitments to the future.
