I thought that this was funny. I don't know if the same corn that humans eat is used for ethanol production. In general I am against subsidies and ethanol production requires tons of water. I think that there are better alternatives such as natural gas.
One of the things we agree on, Zak, is that politics and history are full of unintended consequences. Actually they get more frequent and more dangerous the dumber people get.
Went to a health food store today to get some juice. The hyper salesguy wanted to show me all the "hot" stuff that people are buying. That included some berry juice from Brazil that has the most antioxidants you can get. Wow. I asked him if it was true that farmers are cutting down the Amazon rainforest so they can plant trees to harvest these cool healthy berries for American consumption. He looked confused.
Lots and lots of other alternatives. The Dems still push ethanol but the biggest cost comes in the fact that ethanol crops are subsidized and are therefore more profitable than say wheat with which we make bread. So, farmers are turning under wheat crops to grow corn. Oil shale is a viable option at these prices. Congress shot down a bill that would have allowed our oil people to drill 50-150 miles from our shores but China is already drilling 60 miles from our shores. What is their complaint? Due to the curvature of the earth Santa Barbarians can't see more than 25 miles from the tallest buildings. Perhaps if they could they would know China is already doing it.

It was funny. And true. And sad.
